Acne-prone skin exhibits excessive sebum production due to low levels of linoleic acid and ceramide precursors (sphingolipids, phytosphingosines), as well as an excess of squalenes and waxes.
These altered surface lipids, combined with a disruption in keratinization, contribute to the development of blackheads, promote the growth of bacteria on the skin, increase the release of pro-inflammatory free fatty acids, and impair the skin's barrier function.
